What is a letter in a name?

christinanelsonvfx

Text is everywhere we go. From the billboards we see on the freeway to the posters we see at work. The crazy part is I never realized how much words can make an impact in our lives. Before taking my Typology course, I was never aware of the different text fonts and styles that can be presented in art, marketing or just simply what is in our lives.

Companies can bank on their business through great text propaganda. If you think about it, huge companies like Pixar and Disney have their own brand through their text. When we see their lettering, even if it has nothing to do with the company, we instantly can connect the two.

Social media is another great example like in Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. All these cites have their own individual brand of text and when we see it, we can recognize it.

As an artist, it is important to have a self brand, but within that brand, having a specific logo and within that logo, having a specific font that ties with that logo. The new trends are bright, bold and vibrant colors, something to grab attention. Disney is a great example because they use their same font for many years but also they adapt towards what is going on in the social norm. For example, Disney launched an entire new line of rainbow themed merchandise to celebrate gay pride. With having t shirts, pins, cups, mugs, stuffed animals...…all had one thing in common, the Disney Logo. With making changes but keeping that "brand" logo/text, it was a huge success.

It is easy to get lost in the mix of things. A logo/brand can easily misguide you on what and how you want to represent yourself or your company.

Here are a couple ideas to think about when starting a logo:

1. What is the purpose/meaning?

2. What makes it stand out? Need a grab getter!!!

3. Plan on making changes and adapt to the times

4. Does this represent you?

and just like that you are on your way towards your self branding!

Lastly, when you have time, just stop and look what is around you. Text is everywhere and it is sort of fun to think about why someone decided to chose a certain style to represent a sign, a message, a logo, a billboard or whatever you are looking at but there is one thing in common, it grabbed your attention which is the first step!
